Fingal Bay has always been held in very high regard by the Phillip Hobbs stable, and he can show exactly why in this afternoons Sandown featured graded hurdle.
The 5-y-o is unbeaten in three starts so far and created a deep impression at Cheltenham last time out. He clearly has a lot of potential being a strapping chasing type in the longer term, and was soon tanking along for much of the way there before probably pressing on soon enough, pleasing with the manner in which he recovered from a bad blunder two out. The stiff uphill finish will suit him well at Sandown, and he is confident choice to continue the winning sequence in this traditionally top class contest.
Simonsig shapes as the main danger for the red-hot Henderson yard. His bumper form (for Ian Ferguson) marks him out as an exciting hurdling prospect and he did nothing to change those impressions with an easy debut success over timber. Always going well and producing two particularly impressive jumps over the last flights once sent on, coasting clear to justify his very short price. He seems sure to improve considerably on what he achieved at Ascot and will win more races.
Sizing Symphony travels over from Ireland and boasts solid credentials having won all three starts so far this term. He made all at Cheltenham last time out and may have more streetwise qualities than his unexposed rivals.
Jump City landed some hefty wagers when winning readily first time up and is another open to improvement, but he may find this leap in class too much at this stage of his career, while Barbatos gave our choice a race when second at Cheltenham, but doesn't have the same scope to improve further after seven starts.
In summary a fantastic renewal of this Grade Two contest that brings together some very highly regarded types. At around 5-4 this morning Fingal Bay appeals as a decent win investment, and he can power clear up the hill under regular rider Richard Johnson.
