Magot de Grugy primed for winning reappearance

racing preview

Veteran Magot de Grugy has joined the in-form Victor Dartnall stable and can defy a 593 day absence to land this afternoon's Fontwell feature at 2.50pm.

The 11-y-o has always revelled in testing conditions and heavy overnight rain in the Sussex area has turned conditions very testing. He is sure to be fit and well readied by a yard expert at improving other trainer's cast-offs. Furthermore this is a very modest handicap for the money and he receives weight from some very dubious rivals.

Morning favourite Graduation Night did our followers a turn when landing the "nap" at Chepstow on Wednesday, and is a very fluent jumper for new connections. However his two wins have come in very lowly contests and this is a definite step up in grade under a 7lb penalty.

Sum Laff had chasing experience as a winning point-to-pointer in Ireland before winning a novice hurdle last season. Any cash later on will be a hint that he is fit after a seven month absence, but he appears harshly handicapped on seasonal debut.

Morestead is a standing dish at this unique figure-of-eight circuit and returned to form when runner-up last time out. He is a hardy frontrunner and dominating won't be easy in this bigger field along with the fact that firm ground seems to suit him best.

In summary, Magot de Grugy is worthy of a decent each-way bet at 5-1 this morning. He is well treated on form achieved in the distant past and may be revitalised by a change of scenery. The rain has come just in time and this fluent jumper can land the £4000 prize under Andrew Glassonbury.
