Mon Parrain primed for Paddy Power Gold Cup glory

racing preview

Paul Nicholls has made a flying start to the season, and his highly regarded French import Mon Parrain is a confident choice to land the Paddy Power Gold Cup.

The 5-y-o has been all the rage in ante-post exchanges for this valuable prize, and is sure to be fit and well for this seasonal debut pitched into this very warm twenty runner handicap.

He came over from France with a huge reputation and price tag, but made that seem worth every penny when impressively winning at Sandown in March. A follow up win was expected at Aintree next time, but he faded on the run-in having travelled and jumped superbly in a better race. Sure to be stronger now, he is confidently expected to prove a cut above some useful rivals today before going onto graded company later in the season.

Wishfull Thinking shapes as the main danger. Phillip Hobbs reports his 8-y-o in rude health after a six month absence, and he has crucial experience over these fences last season. Stamina is his strongsuit and the fast run nature of this contest seems sure to suit.

The Giant Bolster is a lively outsider for a small stable in terrific heart. Jumping has always been his problem but he has a superb hit rate when completing, and he shaped well when returning over hurdles at Chepstow in 0ctober.

Araldur was not disgraced when second at Wetherby first time out and is racefit, however he may not shine in this big field when more pressure will be on his fencing, while Great Endeavour has been a disappointment since winning at the festival in 2010.

In summary, a fantastic Saturday handicap for the £150,000 prize money, and Mon Parrain is worth a win investment at around 4-1. He has shaped very well in both starts in England and might be very leniently treated on handicap debut. With Ruby Walsh over for the ride, a heavy antepost gamble can be landed in style.
