Hellfire well treated in Hereford feature

racing preview

Hellfire Club has had more than his share of training problems in the past few years, but appears very well treated in Hereford's feature handicap chase at 2.50.

The 8-y-o appeared an improving winning hurdler in 2009/10, and was sent off a well backed 7-4f on his first outing in eighteen months when reappearing at Lingfield earlier in the month. Although he looked well forward, he was badly let down by his jumping on his chasing debut, dropping away before three out as the mistakes took their toll. He has some potential as a chaser if his jumping can be sorted out, and it is no surprise to see a tongue strap back on today in what appears a very winnable handicap.

Topweight Wester Ross ended a long losing run when winning at Ludlow recently, but that was a very poor affair where the pacesetters burnt each other out, and this will be much tougher under a welter burden.

Morestead is another coming here after winning by a wide margin, but he had previously been well held off lower ratings than this and certainly wouldn't want the forecast good to soft ground to ease any further.

Perhaps Bradford Boris will emerge as the main danger for a yard hitting form after a slow start. He shaped well when just denied at Wincanton on seasonal debut and is sure to strip fitter for that outing.

In summary, a competitive handicap for the £4300 prize money, but a decent chance for well-regarded Hellfire Club to show just why he was so heavily supported first time out. With Wayne Hutchinson up he is worthy of an each-way interest at around 5-1 this morning.
