racing preview

Rose Dobbin's ultra consistent stayer Banoge can land Ayr's featured Play Casino at Betvictor.com Handicap Chase at 2.55 this afternoon.

The 10-y-o is a dual chase winner who has refound consistency since the blinkers were applied this season. He was runner-up for fourth time in five starts over 2m4f here last time and had the re-opposing Something Silver back in third that day. With a more positive ride from regular rider Wilson Renwick he can finally get on the scoresheet in ground that is sure to be extremely testing.

Sammy Spiderman appears the main danger. He has improved with every run this term as his fitness improves, and shaped as though his turn was near when a game second over 3m1f here last time up. The only negative is the drop down four furlongs in trip which seems sure to be a problem given how well he stays marathon trips.

Topweight Quinder Spring is a multiple point-to-point winner who scored over fences at Hexham and Market Rasen last season. He is now one pound lower than his last winning mark, but has not been in same form this term, with connections trying a visor last time out that failed to help him regain his form.

Perhaps course specialist Something Silver can gain his fifth victory at this venue. He is better off at the weights with our selection and has the assistance of the very promising 5lb claimer Lucy Alexander in the saddle. However, he is not the most reliable and, on balance, Banoge may be the safer investment.

In summary, a tight handicap for the £4700 prize money, but there are few more deserving than the perpetual bridesmaid Banoge. At around 7-2 this morning he is well worth a decent win wager in a race that is sure to be a suitable war of attrition up the straight.
