racing preview

Aidan 0'Brien's So You Think is a confident selection for Sunday's fiercely competitive Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp. With the weather forecast sunny and warm for the traditional curtain closer to the flat season, his ex-Australian superstars superior speed can prove decisive.

Horse by horse preview of the principals with current best prices.

Sarafina 7-2f

Regarded as unfortunate here when third behind Workforce last year, this top class filly has been all the rage in the antepost exchanges since winning over CD in August. Boasting an exceptional turn of pace and versatile tactically, she is sure to be popular with the locals on Sunday. Negatives are a suspicion that genuine fast conditions are a doubt and the fact that 3yo's have won 14 of the last 17 runnings must count against her.

Verdict.....the proven form horse but underpriced in a tightly matched Group 1.

So You Think 9-2

Ex-Aussie superstar has tasted defeat just once since joining the Ballydoyle maestro Aidan 0'Brien. Didn't impress all in scrambling home from Snow Fairy in Ireland last time but is sure to be at boiling point for this greatest challenge of his career so far. The faster the better for him and a sunny and hot forecast is ideal. The only negative is the trip, an extra 2f that he is not assured of staying.

Verdict...oozes class and fast ground can swing it his way.

Workforce 6-1

Last years hero has had mixed fortunes this season, mirroring his stables very disappointing Summer. Has to be respected having won a Derby and an Arc and recent reports from Sir Michael Stoute suggests he is storming up the gallops and right back to his best.

Verdict....not the force of old and priced up on memories...fast ground a major worry.

Galikova 7-1

Freddy Head's 3yo stormed into the Arc picture with an impressive success at Longchamp, running on well off a steady pace in a warmly contested Group 1. A lightly raced and progressive filly she is entitled to maximum respect.

Verdict...on the up but every run so far is on easy ground and will she have the experience to deal with the hustle and bustle of a fast ground.

Reliable Man 10-1

Stablemate of Sarafina and closely matched with her on this seasons top class form. However truly fast ground is an imponderable and his trainer reports he may head to Ascot in 0ctober for Champions day if that prevails on Sunday.

Verdict....less exposed and very highly regarded by his powerful French yard but needs softer ground to shine.

Meandre 12-1

Second to Reliable Man in the Prix Niel last time and has won Group 1's in the past....possibly overpriced and hails from a yard expert at winning top class races in France.

Verdict...tightly matched on form with shorter priced rivals.

Hirona D'Amour 20-1

Japanese raider has won only two of his ten career starts and was flattered to finish so close to Sarafina in a messy race here last time out.

Verdict....profile and statistics against him.

Snow Fairy 14-1

Bustled up long odds on So You Think last time and has returned better than ever this year. Fast ground is ideal and seems overpriced at four times the price of the principals. Dettori in the plate for the first time.

Verdict..one for the eachway value "thieves"

Nakayama Festa 20-1

Has fast ground form at this CD and might be overpriced as his form is tied in closely with some of the principals. However has been bit below best the last twice and more exposed than most.

Verdict...best of the Asian raiders but still has few lengths to find.

Daredreame 25-1

Top class German challenger has been routing rivals in the mud at home but faces stiffer rivals here.

Verdict....different form lines to the principals but unproven away from Germany and history suggests little chance
