Cotillion can reward his followers at Chepstow

racing preview

Ian Williams has hit a purple patch since the start of the new year, and his Cotillion is selected to land the Pulteney Land Investment Ltd Handicap Hurdle at Chepstow this afternoon.

The 6-y-o has been a model of consistency all season, and showed career best form when third at Sandown in a valuable Saturday handicap won by the heavily gambled on Ciceron. He fairly flew up the hill there and will surely be ridden more handily this afternoon to utilise his proven stamina.

There are plenty of dangers for the £16,000 prize money with perhaps Grafite the most interesting. He landed a wholesale plunge from 8-1 into 6-4f when readily winning a poor handicap at Lingfield last time out on his first start for the in-form Brendan Powell yard. This is a huge step up in class however, and the handicapper has lumped him up severely in the weights.

Jump City represents the powerful Walsh/Nicholls team and will doubtless attract support on that basis. He has been very disappointing the last twice however, with his margin of defeat behind Darlan last time very flattering in relation to the "hard held" winner. He needs to find improvement for the switch to handicaps and seems poorly treated on the bare form.

Charm School is another handicap debutante and has a flyweight in heavy ground that can prove a big advantage. He has travelled strongly when placed in fair novice hurdles the last twice and is sure to be thereabouts from the off given his frontrunning style.

Extremely So has failed to convince on either start this season and may prefer less testing conditions, while the topweight Sire De Grugy seems firmly in the handicappers grip now after two wins at the end of 2011.

In summary, a warmly contested contest but an ideal chance for the consistent Cotillion to gain reward for such a sustained run of good efforts. At around 4-1 this morning he is worth a decent each-way investement under the promising Harry Skelton.
