racing preview

John Gosden's Fencing is selected to land the £200000 Racing Post Trophy at Doncaster this afternoon.

This end of season prize traditionally attracts the cream of the juvenile talent and this years renewal appears no exception. Fencing shaped with abundant promise when third in a strong 7f Newmarket maiden in July and more than confirmed that impression with easy win in a Newbury listed event. He has the scope to progress further and at around 7-2 this morning appears a solid win proposition.

Balydoyle have entered the well regarded Camelot, and this unbeaten Montjeu colt has been the subject of sustained support in the betting in the past few days. With such strength in the yard, this cash must be hugely significant but the fact remains the form of his debut victory in a five runner Leopardstown maiden amounts to very little. The time that day was modest and some good judges felt his head carriage was on the high side. Even from these powerful connections, the morning price of 11-8 appears extremely short and the value lies elsewhere.

Encke may represent a bigger danger to our selection. He was edged out by a useful prospect over course and distance on debut last month and went one better at Newmarket next time, quickening well to win by three lengths after briefly meeting trouble. He could be anything and is worth a saver at around 11-2.

In summary, Fencing appears a decent wager this morning against an overhyped false favourite. His stable has been in excellent form this Autumn and he can swoop through late under William Buick.
