racing preview

John Gosden has a small but select team for the all-weather season and his Discoverer is a confident selection to land the featured Racingplus.co.uk Handicap.

The well bred 3-y-o didn't need to match his debut second (dead-heated) at Lingfield (7f) to go one better over the same course and distance a month ago. He is sure to get further in time, but is in excellent hands and seems very leniently treated for this handicap debut in a race without much strength in depth. .

Main danger for the £6300 prize money is the prolific Pale 0rchard. The hardy filly has improved for the switch in yards to David Evans, backing up her ready maiden success at Lingfield when fending off a well-treated sort here (6f) last time. She thrives on racing and is the type to go on progressing despite the handicappers best efforts to halt her.

Fairway to Heaven represents connections who often have the layers running for cover, and he landed a bit of a touch on his debut over C&D two weeks ago. The costly purchase won despite greenness there, masking his superiority as he idled when hitting the front, so he is open to plenty of improvement now handicapping. The betting later on will be a huge clue as to what is expected.

Adranian comes here on a roll having won two modest Wolverhampton contests since the turn of the year. However, he is well up in the weights as a result, has never run at this venue, and is far more exposed than some highly regarded types from bigger yards.

Topweight Right Divine was thought good enough to run in Group class on the turf last season and represents a top yard. That said, he was well held and has started at big prices on all starts suggesting he is not held in that much regard at home.

In summary, a high class contest that illuminates a weather hit Wednesday. John Gosden has brought along Discoverer slowly and he appears open to a deal of improvement now handicapping. At around 3-1 this morning he is worth a win investment under the underrated Nicky Mackay.
