Artistic Jewel is a solid selection to land the principal race of the day at Salisbury this afternoon, the Veronica Stewart Memorial Conditions Stakes at 3.35.
Ed McMahon's filly created a lasting impression when winning on her debut at Windsor in July, showing a rare turn of speed from an unpromising position mid-race to land a contest that has subsequently proved solid form. In two subsequent runs she has been stepped up hugely in class and performed with credit. At Doncaster last time she was a close third to the useful Eureka, pressing hard in the final furlong despite racing wide without any cover throughout.
This sets a high standard for main rival today Ihsas to aim at, and on this occasion it can pay to side with form over potential at around 2-1. Saeed Bin Suroor introduced this beautifully bred sister to Rio de la Plata at Lingfield 22 days ago, and she duly readily landed a modest 7f all-weather maiden on the bridle. She could be anything but the percentage call is that was a poor contest, over a furlong further than todays contest and she is sure to need a mile plus in time.
Dangers to the principal pair are Gusto and Rex Imperator. Both have excuses for recent flops and have claims on efforts earler in the season. Gusto hails from the Hannon yard that have been in flying form this Autumn, and his Ripon run last month may have been too soon after a good effort when fourth at York. Rex Imperator was badly impeded when unplaced in a valuable sales race last time but had previously shown a decent level in defeat. Both however seem a few pounds behind Artistic Jewel and do not have the scope for improvement.
Hopefully Graham Gibbons can get our selection settled and covered up early before coming with a perfectly timed run inside the final furlong. The 2-1 available this morning is a price worth taking.
