racing preview

The consistent Arturo Uno is selected to land Leicester's featured SIS handicap chase at 3.40 this afternoon.

The 9-y-o was very disappointing at Newbury last time out in a race where nothing from off the pace managed to get involved. However, his seasonal debut form when a clear second gives him every chance of landing this lesser contest, and the stables excellent recent hot spell is further encouragement that a big run can be expected under Sam Twiston Davies. He remains a maiden over jumps but has been thrown in at the deep end on several occasions and should appreciate the decent ground this afternoon, with a 41 day absence no concern as his best form seems when fresh.

There are plenty of dangers for the £6000 prize money, with perhaps Rate Of Knots the principal threat under topweight. He was placed in two fair handicaps early in the season and appeared to be travelling very strongly when falling after halfway in the Sussex National at Plumpton last time out. If managing a clear round he is sure to be thereabouts with the excellent Richie McClernon an ideal partner to finnesse him into contention with his patient riding style.

Samurai Way is interesting from a handicapping point of view and the fact that the Venetia Williams stable is enjoying a prolific spell in January. However, he has been very sparingly campaigned in recent years and evidently has plenty of physical problems, and there was scant encouragement on his seasonal debut when a remote eighth of twelve.

Evella and Don't Tell Sailor seem sure to dispute a fast pace which may cancel each other out, while Plum Pudding is well up in class for landing a poor handicap on New Years Eve.

In summary a fine chance for Arturo Uno to capitalise on a drop in class and shed his maiden tag. At around 6-1 this morning he represents the each-way value in a race where plenty are hard to consider.
