Eyre Square has made steady progression both as a hurdler and a chaser in the past two years, and can defy 11-12 in the Haydock feature this afternoon.
The 8-y-o has made a winning start this season over the smaller obstacles, nudged out to land some hefty bets in a modest Hexham novice. That pipe-opener should put him spot on for this competitive handicap chase, and his proven stamina at this 3m trip can prove decisive in a race sure to be run at a blistering pace on the prevailing fast ground.
Spanish Cruise is an interesting runner switched to the red-hot Charlie Longsden stable after a 150 day absence. He has an excellent record fresh and is sure to be fit given the yard's record at present. However he is at his best when dominating, and there is competition for the lead here with Morning Moment sure to attempt to blaze the trail.
Calypso Bay was twice a winner over hurdles and put a poor chase debut behind him when winning at Market Rasen in August. He ran well in face of relative speed test at Ludlow next time and looks an obvious player here. While Damman hails from new trainer Fergal 0'Brien, who's few runners so far have all run very well. The 6-y-o was a prolific point-to-pointer before winning a hunter chase at Cheltenham in May, and any support in the betting later on will be a big clue after 152 days away from the racecourse.
Badger Foot is another beginning for a new stable after an absence, but does have it to prove after losing his action and pulling up when last seen. The fitting of a first time tongue-tie is interesting but he might prefer a bit more give in the ground.
In summary, a wide open handicap for the £5000 prize, which seems sure to be run at a true gallop. Any number are open to improvement for new yards but Eyre Square is a solid, reliable stayer who has won four of his last seven starts in either code. At around 9-2 this morning he is worthy of an each-way investment under his promising young pilot James Reveley, who can bring him through in the straight as superior stamina tells.
