Medermit appeals as being well treated pitched into a handicap and can land this afternoon's £100,000 Spinal Research The Atlantic 4 Gold Cup at Cheltenham.

The 7-y-o was one of last season's leading novice chasers and made a winning return in the Haldon Gold Cup, albeit rather fortunate that Captain Chris fell at the last when pressing. His jumping rather let him down behind Master Minded and Somersby at Ascot last time but this strongly run, big field handicap will play to his strengths, and he can defeat some more experienced campaigners under Robert Thornton.

The first three home in the Paddy Power Gold Cup, Great Endeavour, Quantitativeeasing and Divers lock horns again and shouldn't be far away, but last year's third Sunnyhillboy is reunited with A. P. McCoy after a decent effort over hurdles on his return and may prove the principal danger in an extremely competitive renewal.

The 8-y-o was very unlucky not to win the Irish National last season and was a very eye-catching seventh behind Dynaste over Fixed Brush hurdles in last month's reappearance. His stable is in excellent heart and he has been laid out for this.

Victor Dartnall's Roudoudou Ville is an unexposed chaser who returned with an impressive effort to win 2½m Sandown handicap, asserting readily in the straight having travelled and jumped smoothly. He is well worth his place in this despite the handicapper lumping him up in the weights.

Salut Flo returns after 615 days off, but the David Pipe stable has an excellent record at this level and he is worthy of respect especially if the cash arrives. He made a fine start for new connections in 2009/10, winning a 2m3f Doncaster handicap chase impressively and then a good second at Haydock next time before missing last season with leg injury.

Ghizao will be popular for the Nicholls/Walsh combination, but he was well behind Medermit on his seasonal bow and will need to jump a lot better in this bigger field to be a threat up the hill.

In summary, a fascinating handicap with any number with claims, but perhaps Medermit has more scope to improve from a very fair rating and he is worth an each-way interest at around 12-1 this morning.
