racing preview

Paul Nicholls now has the useful Hold Fast in his powerful yard, and he can land the competitive Sportingbet Handicap Chase at Newbury this afternoon.

The lightly raced 7-y-o showed plenty of talent for Howard Johnson, winning twice over hurdles and readily landing a novice chase at Southwell in April. He couldn't be in better hands and is surely capable of further progress on handicap debut. Crucially Ruby Walsh travels over for the ride, and he is sure to utilise the bold jumping strong traveller positively from the front.

Rileyev will be popular after returning to form at Ascot last time out, and his yard is finally emerging from a typically slow start. However that was a below par contest with the principals failing to figure, and he may still be firmly in the handicappers grip after a winning spell last season.

A bigger danger may come from Aigle d'0r who won this race a year ago off a 7 lb lower mark. He has been restricted to just three runs since, but ran a cracker despite mistakes when last seen at Galway in July, and his yard could hardly be in better form.

Oh Crick has gradually returned to a more realistic mark after mainly facing stiff tasks over the last two seasons, but is seemingly not the force of old and first-time cheekpieces will need to spark a revival.

In summary a wide open contest for the £20000 prize money, but the champion trainer has improved similar types already this season, and Hold Fast is worth a win investment at around 3-1 this morning.
