Piraya set to build on Ascot promise

racing preview

David Pipe's Piraya was a hefty gamble when third at Ascot five days ago, and can recoup those losses in style at Newbury this afternoon.

A competitive field lines up for the £11,000 prize money, and the 8-y-o is sure to get a positive ride from Tom Scudamore as he bids to give weight away all round on the forecast good ground.

He will relish the long Newbury straight and must go close if avoiding the errors that saw him lose a fair mid-race position last time out, before staying on powerfully for a distant third.

Blinkers helped That'lldoboy to a first success under Rules at Wincanton recently and if the headgear works for a second time he could well follow up, while Rackham Lerouge hails from a top yard in sensational form, so could easily bounce back this term.

At a bigger price, Zarrafakt has to be of interest on seasonal debut with his yard suddenly in excellent heart after a slow start. He left some modest hurdling form well behind to win hard held on his chasing bow at Folkestone a year ago and all three career wins have been on the back of long absences. His punters will have to forgive two dire pulled up runs after that however, and this is a hot handicap to win first time out.

Cottage Acre has claims if stripping fitter for a hurdles pipeopener, while Buffalo Bob has run his best races at this galloping course and is entitled to respect, although his stable is enduring a barren spell.

In summary a wide open and useful handicap, with Piraya fancied to build on the promise of that Ascot third. He is best when dominating and there seem to be few trailblazers to bother him in the thirteen strong field. At around 5-1 this morning he is worth an each-way interest.
