Sir Mark Prescott's progressive juvenile Repeater is a confident choice to land the days feature event at Leicester this afternoon, the Squirrel Conditions Stakes at 3.40.
0nly three runners have turned up for this valuable £9000 prize, which must be a major disappointment to the course executive. Presumably the prevailing firm ground is the reason for such a low turnout, but these conditions should prove ideal for Repeater.
The 2 y-o has improved gradually all season and supplemented a gritty maiden win at Epsom in July by landing a competitive nursery at Ripon last time out. The manner of that win strongly suggests that this step up to 1m1f will be ideal, overcoming all sorts of trouble in running before finishing well to land that a competitive mile handicap.
Main danger comes from the in-form Hannon yard in Rougemont. This Montjeu colt readily won a decent maiden on debut and was immediately upped to Listed class last time. However, he was the first beaten there, finishing well in rear and hasn't been seen out since. With that run fresh in the memory it maces sense to stay with the proven well-being and form of Repeater.
Betting the outsider of three is an often heard maxim on the racecourse (one which statisitics do not agree with), and Mick Channon's exposed Tidal Wave will attract support on this basis. However his merit is well established and it was a poor maiden at Thirsklast time out where he finally got off the mark at the sixth attempt.
In summary, the Evens available this morning about Repeater seems a fair price with doubts about his two rivals. Expect a no nonsense ride from the front by Seb Sanders, with this stiff test of stamina for a 2-y-o sure to suit our selection.
