Quel Ballistic can defy topweight in Doncaster feature

racing preview

John Wade's 8-y-o Quel Ballistic can gain due reward for his consistent efforts this season by landing the St Leger Tickets On Sale 6th February Handicap Chase.

At Catterick last time he might have pegged back Corkage if they'd both stood up, not moving so strongly as that rival for most of the final circuit but responding really well on his first try at the longer trip, unlucky to get so badly hampered by that rival's fall two out and giving his rider no chance of maintaining the partnership. He has to lump 11-12 this afternoon, but this appears a slightly lesser contest and he can gain compensation under regular rider Wilson Renwick.

Bishophill Jack comes here fresh from two hard fought wins at Wetherby and Huntingdon, responding gamely to pressure having come off the bridle first on both occasions. He is the type to carry on defying the handicapper as he seems very idle in front, but he will need to get into a better rhythm on this faster ground/speed course.

Quetzal is another in rude health, having gamely won two of his last three handicaps in the north, and he is sure to be thereabouts with the Martin Todhunter stable enjoying a purple patch.

Bottomweight Sycho Fred was just denied after the last in a poor handicap last time but has never been the type to hold his form for long and is best opposed upped in class, while Vin Roy seems to have an awful lot of weight for what he has achieved over fences so far in two tries.

In summary, a trappy handicap for the £5000 prize money, but a decent chance for Quel Ballistic to give weight away all round after an unfortunate spill before Christmas when poised to win a better contested race. At around 4-1 he represents decent each-way value and is worth an interest.
