Drumshambo poised to turn silver into gold

The Venetia Williams stable has had an extremely quiet time of things so far this season, but her reliable Drumshambo is selected to land Taunton's feature handicap hurdle at 2.55.
The consistent 5-y-o has been a close second on both recent starts at Exeter and Huntingdon, bumping into progressive rivals each time, and can gain compensation at this sharp course which should suit his smooth travelling run-style.
The £7850 prize money has drawn a competitive sixteen runner field, and fortune in running is sure to play a part. Main danger comes in the shape of Laudatory, for whom champion A P McCoy is a very eyecatching booking.
Nicky Henderson's 5-y-o made a highly encouraging return to the fray when fifth behind Bally Legend in a fiercely contested Cheltenham handicap, and is sure to go well with his yard in blistering form throughout this winter.
At bigger prices the hard-pulling Dragon's Den might reward each-way support. He needs a fast pace to enable him to settle in rear, and should get the ideal tempo this afternoon. When things drop right for him he has a decent turn of foot at the business end.
Swiss Art returned to form at Plumpton last time but that was a poor affair and he needs to find improvement for another switch of yards, while course and distance winner Beside the Fire seems firmly in the handicappers grip after a rise in the weights for his November triumph.
In summary, a very warm handicap, but a decent chance for Drumshabo to gain reward for two near misses. He needs to find rhythm in the hurdling department under Sam Thomas, but should appreciate the decent ground this afternoon. At around 8-1 this morning he is worth an each-way investment with the layers paying 1/4 the odds 1,2,3,4.
