racing preview

Paul Nicholls progressive novice Rangitoto is a confident selection to land the Tauntonracecourse.co.uk Novices' Limited Handicap Chase under Ruby Walsh.

The 7-y-o has long since appealed as a good chasing prospect, his near-useful achievements in a relatively short space of time over hurdles very encouraging with that in mind, and he got the job done on his chasing debut without having to get close to the level he'll reach in time. His jumping was safe in the main and he was in full control once taking over going best three out, a tendency to idle late meaning the winning margin doesn't do justice to his superiority in landing a decent Wincanton novice. The second there Webberys Dream advertised the form with a win on Saturday and he seems sure to be hard to beat this afternoon.

The £11,000 prize money has attracted a competitive field, with perhaps Master Fiddle the main danger. He was all the rage in the betting before his seasonal/chasing debut, pitched into a warm Newbury handicap at his first attempt over the larger obstacles, but unseated his rider when cruising into contention a mile out (trading at odds on in running). The 7-y-o was near top class over hurdles and is sure to give our selection a race if finding a rhythm over these easier fences.

Von Griego stepped forward with a good second at Ascot in December but has a bit to find on the figures with the principals, while Balzaccio seemed to have his limitations exposed at this level when a well held fifth last time out.

Made in Time has unseated the last twice and will use this as a confidence restorer, while handicapper Time for Spring seems totally outclassed.

In summary, a very useful contest for a Monday, but a great chance for Rangitoto to build on an impressive chasing debut. It is surely a huge clue that Ruby Walsh is over for the ride and he is must bet material at around 2-1 this morning.
