Thunder to cope with rise in class

racing preview

Stevie Thunder is a confident choice to land this afternoon's featured £18000 Thororughbred Breeders Conditions Stakes.

Ian William's 6-y-o has made rapid progression this season, winning with strong late runs both at Ripon and Newmarket. Raised in the weights he finished a clear second in a very strong renewal of the Cambridgeshire last time and is clearly still on the upgrade. The yard has been in excellent form in the past fortnight with several well supported winners, and he is the value at around 4-1 to step up further in class today.

Principal danger is Godolphin's reliable Secrecy. He has won three similar events in 2011 and ran another creditable race at Hamilton last time out. A steady pace that day didn't apprear to suit and he will surely go close under Dettori in a modest contest for the money.

Fury is respected on his juvenile form where he was unbeaten and shaped as though a profitable 3-y-o campaign lay ahead. However he has become very disappointing and has it all to prove after a 95 day lay off. Unless a deluge of cash arrives from his shrewd yard, he will surely struggle.

A bigger danger may come in the form of Inler. Brian Meehan's charge has flopped this season but shaped much better at Saisbury last time after a gelding operation. He was set too much to do that day and not given a hard time when the leaders got away. At 10-1 he is worth a saver with little strength in depth in opposition.

In summary, Stevie Thunder has it to do on official ratings with some more "glamourous" rivals. However he is a tough, in form handicapper from a yard suddenly flying and is the percentage call upped in grade this afternoon. His customary late surge can land the spoils under championship chasing pilot Paul Hanagan.
