Son Vida can continue Johnston's fine form

racing preview

Son Vida is an unexposed 4-y-o for a stable in blistering form and can land Southwell's featured Thousands Of Sports Experiences at Bluesq.com Handicap at 4.25.

The well-bred colt looked a really useful prospect when scoring over course and distance on his debut thirteen months ago, but made a low-key comeback switched to a handicap on polytrack recently. This return to the deeper fibresand surface can see him recapture winning form, with the Mark Johnston yard continuing to dominate the all-weather season.

Main danger for the £7000 prize money comes from the potentially well handicapped Call to Reason. She rather lost her way last term for Jeremy Noseda, but returned with a very promising third off this mark after a short break for her new yard over this C&D in January. That should have put her spot on for today, and it will be very interesting to see if the cash arrives later on.

Pipers Piping has been a model of consistency at a low level for the past few months and is sure to be thereabouts returning to this venue, although he is much higher in the weights after routing rivals over this course and distance in January and a few others may now be better treated.

The Lock Master is another regular runner in these type of races, but he is very hard to win with, and his losing run now stretches from January 2011.

Dubaianswer landed a bit of a touch 44 days ago here on just his second attempt on fibresand, but the absence since is a slight concern and the assesor has demanded a lot more by raising his rating significantly.

Perhaps Community may pose a threat off a flyweight at a bigger price. She has run respectably on both tries in handicaps at this venue since opening her account in a C&D maiden in December. Although 1lb "wrong" at the weights on this occasion, she cannot be ruled out by any means under the talented 7lb claimer Danny Brock.

In summary, a typically tight handicap pulling together a lot of the usual suspects. Son Vida is totally unexposed, represents top connections and perhaps the fast surface was the cause of his poor return to the fray. At around 6-1 this morning he is worth chancing with a small each-way investment.
