Chilli Rose can give weight away all round and land this afternoons Plumpton feature at 1.40, the valuable Totequadpot Mares' Handicap Hurdle over 2m5f.
The 6-y-o has been absent since Cheltenham in April, but has a decent record fresh and hails from a yard suddenly in excellent form after a slow beginning to the season. She competed with credit in far better handicaps than this since graduating from novice class, and will relish the drop in grade and soft conditions this afternoon.
Her main rival comes in the shape of Extremely So, for whom champion AP McCoy appears a significant booking. She shaped well when third at Lingfield on seasonal debut and is entitled to strip fitter for that outing.
Malaventa has enjoyed a consistent winter at this level, and boasts winning course form here at the end of 0ctober, however those performances were all on decent ground and the heavy overnight rain is possibly a negative as she steps up in distance today.
Pepite Rose has been absent for nine months but revels in the mud and is one to watch if the cash arrives later. Traditionally her trainer Venetia Williams excels in December and her consitent mare is leniently treated if fit and ready first time up.
In summary, a competitive handicap for the £7000 prize money, but an ideal opening for Chilli Rose to end a losing run lasting to March 2009. With Robert Thornton in the saddle, she is worth an each-way interest at around 5-1 this morning, with proven stamina in the testing conditions a huge asset for a race that may develop into something of a slog.
