Nigel Twiston Davies' reliable Nudge and Nurdle is selected to land Ludlow's Thursday feature this afternoon, the Weatherbys 2012 Annual handicap chase at 2.00.
The 10-y-o has been a model of consistency when conditions are on the fast side of good, and he goes especially well at this tight Shropshire venue. After a rather flat run at the undulating Cheltenham course last time, he can return to the winners enclosure in a handicap that is not as competitive as the numbers imply.
He has several decent placed efforts on his CV here and with useful 3lb claimer Tom Molloy in the saddle, can stay on best in the straight with several frontrunners sure to ensure a cutthroat pace.
Morning favourite Bold Perk was let down by his jumping last time, but a repeat of his course and distance effort last month when leading all the way would see him go very close. However, the handicapper has put him up in the weights as a result, and he faces several other trailblazers today which may spoil this freegoing types chance.
Topweight Gentleman Anshan is a fluent jumper and has a decent record here, but a six month absence is a concern and he is unproven over this trip, while Cootehill is weighted more on his fair hurdling form rather than anything so far achieved over the larger obstacles.
A bigger threat may come from Backfromthecongo. His stable has a superb hit rate this season and he shaped far better than the bare result when a distant sixth on seasonal debut. The 10-y-o travelled strongly until tiring in the soft ground that day, amd might be fitter here off a light weight on faster ground under Jamie Moore.
In summary a decent contest for the £10000 prize money presents a great opportunity for Nudge and Nurdle to snap a losing run stretching to November 2009. He is worth a decent each-way investment at around 6-1 this morning, with conditions ideal provided the rain stays away.
