Henrietta Knight has enjoyed a great start to the new year and her consistent Silver Roque is selected to land the Weatherbys Bank Novices' Handicap Chase.
The 6-y-o has made steady progress since switching to the larger obstacles and seems genuine enough for all he had cheekpieces fitted on his latest start and has a rather ungainly head carriage. He improved to get off the mark somewhat belatedly, jumping soundly on the whole, pressing on at the eighth and always having the measure of his only serious rival when it counted in the straight. This is a stiffer contest for the £7000 prize money but he appeals as the type to carry on improving now he has got his head in front, and regular rider Dominic Elsworth is riding at the top of his game at the moment.
Main danger appears to be the progressive Get it 0n. He shaped well when a close fourth in a warm Taunton handicap won by Michael Flips last time out and will reish this return to calmer waters. He has run well at this course in the past and will relish the fast pace sure to be set by Alpha Way. The only negative against him is trying to lump 11-12 in this heavy rain eased ground will not be easy.
Scoter Fontaine has failed to complete in his last three starts and form figures of UUF do not exactly inspire, however he was more than the equal of these over hurdles and would be a threat to all if ever finding rhythm in the fencing department.
Alpha Way is a tearaway frontrunner who has improved out of all recognition for his new young trainer Tom Symonds. The race he won at Taunton six days ago was a poor contest however where he was allowed all his own way. These rivals are sure to stay in touch and he may fall away when push comes to shove in the straight.
In summary, a fascinating four cornered affair sure to be run at a decent clip. Silver Roque has a gently proressive profile and hails from a yard now in full flow after a slow start. At around 2-1 this morning he is well worth a substancial investment to follow up an impressive victory last time out.
