Sports Line set to benefit from reduced rating

racing preview

Donald McCain's formerly top class Sports Line has fallen in the weights and is primed on seasonal debut to land today's Aintree feature.

The classy 8-y-o had a very modest season in 2010/11 and this has led to some real leniency from the handicapper. His rating has plummeted and he can resume winning ways after a 199 day absence. The stable has made a fast start and first time out has always been the best time to catch Sports Line. He has always performed at the top level in his novice season, including a gallant third to Captain Cee Bee in a Grade 1 at Punchestown. These calmer waters today should be ideal and Timmy Murphy is sure to give him a typically patient ride over the demanding fences.

The £17000 prize money has produced a classy field and cases can be made for several rivals. Taceroc returns after a six month rest and had been prolific in hunter chase company in the Spring. Those were relatively modest events however, and his powerful yard has been slow to hit top gear so far with a few high profile disappointments.

Quicuyo has race fitness on his side after winning at Carlisle 16 days ago in a competitive handicap. He has never been the most reliable and faces stiffer opposition here at this much speedier course and distance. Perhaps Quito du Tresor will prove the main danger. He impressed when setting a fast pace and repelling all over hurdles last time out, and might be hard to catch if finding the same fluency over the larger obstacles this afternoon.

In summary, a red hot handicap sure to be run at a blistering gallop can prove ideal for the patiently ridden Sports Line. He will be dropped out and produced at the last as the trailblazers flag. At around 6-1 this moring he is worth a win investment.
