Magot de Grugy can supplement Fontwell victory

racing preview

Victor Dartnall's veteran Magot de Grugy is a confident choice to land Wincanton's feature handicap chase at 2.10.

The 11-y-o took advantage of the handicapper's generosity when making a winning return from a long absence at Fontwell last month. He has been raised 7 lb for that, but remains fairly treated given that the placed horse have advertised the form since. The eased ground will be ideal and regular rider Denis 0'Regan is in the saddle.

Just the Job landed a trio of handicap hurdles at up to 2m5f a year ago, and belatedly proved himself as good over fences when scoring at Ludlow (3m) last time. He is penalised for that win (which came in a notably poor affair) and has a lot more on his plate upped in grade here.

Upham Atom is a very consistent stayer with a decent record over this course and distance, however he usual needs a few runs to reach full fitness and a seven month absence is a concern.

Perhaps a bigger danger may come from Nudge and Nurdle. He has been on the go a long time and doesn't find winning easy, but this course may suit better than the sharp tests he has faced at Ludlow this season.

In summary a wide open handicap but a great chance for Magot de Grugy to follow up his debut win. At around 11-4 this morning he is worth a decent win investement with forecast rain sure to help.
