racing preview

Nick Williams progressive novice Swincombe Flame is selected to land this afternoon's Kempton feature, the William Hill Lanzarote handicap hurdle at 2.50.

The 6-y-o has really impressed in winning decent novice hurdles at Exeter and Wincanton, justifying hefty support on both occasions, and appears very leniently treated on this handicap debut. His jumping has improved on all three starts and he is sure to make a bold bid from the front under regular rider Will Kennedy.

Dangers abound in a typically competitive renewal for the forty thousand pounds prize money, with perhaps David Pipe's reliable Decoy the main threat. He routed the field to land a valuable Cheltenham handicap in November and then caught a tartar when a heavily backed favourite at Ascot seven days later. Although the handicapper has lumped him up in the weights, he still appeals as reasonably unexposed and will have been freshened up for this by his in form yard.

Ohio Gold has won two novice hurdles impressively and will relish this speed course and distance now switched to handicaps. His chance is respected although he does seem to have been alloted a fairly stiff rating on the bare form of those odds-on victories.

Well Regarded is another novice stepping up in grade and he is sure to be thereabouts, however he has shaped as though in need of a trip and this sharp two miles five furlongs is not certain to be in his favour.

Lightning Strike was a very impressive winner at Hereford on Sunday and is sure to go well again if the run doesn´t come too soon. His yard is suddenly in blistering form although it did appear a big advantage to race wide last time and he may be flattered by that impressive success.

In summary, a fiercely competitive renewal but a great chance for Swincombe Flame to land his most valuable prize to date. At around 8-1 this morning he represents cracking each-way value with the layers paying 1-4 the odds 1,2,3,4.
