racing preview

Surfboard is a confident selection to land the 3.20 Ilfracombe Food Service handicap chase at Exeter this afternoon.

David Pipe has nursed the 10-y-o back to top form this season after a long time in the wilderness, and he appeared set to register a second win over hurdles last time when drawing clear from the home turn. However he idled in front and was collared after the last in a fair handicap. Switched to fences this afternoon, he can benefit from a more patient ride by Tom Scudamore and assert his authority on the ideal fast ground.

This is by no means a strong contest with recent winning form very thin on the ground. Morning favourite Justabout at least ran with credit when second at Plumpton last time, although he enjoyed a soft lead there and has plenty of competition for the frontrunning role today, with Morestead for one a confirmed trailblazer.

0rion Star has a consistent profile and seems sure to be thereabouts off a flyweight. He ran with credit after a rest at Fontwell last time and has a decent record over this course and distance. Topweight Cullahil loves fast ground and is usually a reliable stayer, but he ran so poorly last time out that he is hard to fancy here, while Nostringsattached has lost his way badly and is only a single figure price because AP McCoy has the ride for his attached stable.

In summary, Surfboard is by far the most interesting runner in a poor race for the £6000 prize money. If he can get into a rhythm with his jumping early on, his superior finishing speed can prove a telling force. At 7-1 this morning he is a few points over the odds and worth a small win investment.
