The moment came in Suzuka, Japan when Vettel strolled past the finishing line and claimed the F1 drivers' championship, while Jensen Button won the race itself. They will travel to Korea to contest yet again with only pride at stake with Red Bull savouring every moment of their 2011 success.
Korean GP 2011
Fourth last race of the season and amongst many F1 fans, the championship is done and dusted with Sebastian Vettel taking the honours in last weekend’s Japan GP in Suzuka. The excitement for the top might just have fizzed out but surely every F1 driver will still be in search for the win as the Korea GP is held from the 14th of October with the race day on the 16th of October. Fernando Alonso won this race back in 2010.
The race circuit is 5.615km with the race distance at 308.630km. All drivers’ will need to complete 55 laps to be crowned as champion of the circuit and Fernando Alonso holds the record of the lap time of 1:50.257 which has stood since 2010. Sebastian Vettel won this race back in 2009 and 2010 and what’s going to stop him from collecting yet another maximum points in the 2011 edition.
Winning feeling
First hosted in 2010, Fernando Alonso was still in the race to be crowned F1 driver championship, one year later, the Spaniard had to concede the 2011 title to Sebastian Vettel even before heading to Korea. The defending champion and 2011 champion, Sebastian Vettel wrapped up the season with a third place in Suzaka, making it impossible mathematically for the other to catch him. The newly crowned champion will be looking to win Korea but within cautious mode to preserve the car.
Consistently and proudly, both Fernando Alonso and Jensen Button have been trailing Vettel all throughout the year. As for Button, winning the Japan GP was his third track win this season and that is the second most track wins after Vettel. It does explain the superiority of the Red Bull car compared to the others. Button is surely riding on some form and momentum. The Spaniard can’t be happy with the gap between him and Red Bull but to add the McLaren into the mix, something must be done for the next season. The Ferraris are constantly just a car behind both the McLarens and Red Bull, so back to the drawing board for Ron Smedley with Alonso.
Someone who has a disappointing year must also find it tough to return back to winning form is McLarens Lewis Hamilton. He finished Japan in fifth place and not even near podium at any point of the race. His off the field management and support needs to work a bit closer with Lewis and maybe a turn of fate in the new season, but Korea could be a good start.
Mid-table Fight
Not much happening after the top five drivers at the top, maybe the battle between Rosberg and Schumacher will create the excitement or seeing someone like S. Perez and Paul Di Resta to raise to the top. Of course, not to mention that Bruno Senna is amongst the crowd to emerge.
Verdict
Back to back champion, Vettel might take a bit of a breather on this occasion and like Suzuka, a podium finish is highly probable and of course, grid start is likely to be first. Looking at the stats, Vettel is the only driver to finish all races, no lower than a podium finish and 12 pole position and nine races won. So the question yet again, is who has the heart to win it, both Alonso and Button are very good candidate, especially the Spaniard who won the first ever the Korean track held. However, with the two long straight tracks from corner two to corner four, this track will suit the McLarens. If that is the case then Button is your man yet again.
