Five hundred days from now, the 30th Olympiad will take place in London. In 06 July 2005, the IOC president Jacque Rogge made the announcement in Singapore that London will be the host nation for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
London won the right to host the 2012 Olympic, beating the then prime favourite Paris along with Moscow, Madrid and New York. Leading up to the final vote, the latter three were eliminated in the early rounds of voting. New York’s bid dogged by problems over their proposed stadium, Moscow was seen as the outsider and Madrid not an ideal candidate, thus, leaving Paris and London go head to head in the final round.

London rallied with the support of high calibre profiles in both the sports and the political arena as well as the Royal Family. Along with sporting celebrities that included David Beckham, to show solidarity, the then Prime Minister flew to London and the Queen herself send a personal message, read by the Princess Royal, of inviting to the OIC members to Buckingham Palace if London wins the bid. Along this tempting invitation from the Queen of England, London bidders lead by chairman Lord Coe, courted the Madrid supporters to get their votes if the Spanish will be eliminated on the earlier round. These tactics had paid off, London beat the long-term favourite Paris in a two-way fight by 54 votes to 50, winning marginally by 4 votes only in a secret electronic ballot of the International Committee in Singapore.
