Group A:

Home team and hot favorites to win the world cup, New Zealand are under pressure to do well in their first game against Tonga (Friday 9th). The home team is undefeated on home soil for two years, so it will take a lot of beating to sink this lot. The All Blacks are expected to dominate and play with confidence in front of their home crowd. France is also expected to follow New Zealand into the quarterfinals and they are taking one of their best sides ever to a World Cup. It will be interesting to see whether they progress any further in the knockout phrase. The rest of the group is made up with Tonga, Canada and Japan. Chances are slim for these nations, but if there was one that could surprise then shoot at Tonga.

Favorite – New Zealand

The Rest of the Group: France, Tonga, Canada, Japan

Group B:

Many will point toward England as the main favorite to finish top of the group. But the English will have to tough it out with Argentina and their friendly neighbors, Scotland for the two qualifying spots available. Momentum is behind England as they recently won the Six Nations, experience which will no doubt be of value come the knockout stages. Then comes Argentina and Scotland, but realistically the French have more energy and experience to get them through. So don't hold much faith for Scotland, Georgia and Romania.

Favorite - England

The Rest of the Group: Argentina, Scotland, Georgia, Romania

Group C:

Here we go, twice champions and runner-ups, Australia will want to upstage their host by winning this world cup. They are another favourite to win the tournament but lacking behind New Zealand in terms of the odds. But never the less, they could be a good bet as they beat New Zealand in the tri-nations. They are grouped with Ireland who are the major threat for the Aussie to finish top of the group. Both are likely to go through to the quarterfinals while Italy, Russia and Team USA are less fancied. Both Australia and Ireland are consistent performers but if there is only one to pick out of this group, Australia is your team.

Favorite - Australia

The Rest of Group: Ireland, Italy, Russia, USA

Group D:

Third favourite in this tournament and no surprise, is South Africa. They are defending champions who will be using all their strength to get their hands on the trophy once again. The Springboks are a well equipped team with both youth and experience, who are sure not going down without a shout. They will have a bit of competition from both Wales and Samoa, but most likely these nations will fight for second spot in the group. Samoa surprised in the last world cup while Wales hasn’t been the same team that experienced some good wins in recent years. Namibia and Fuji will finish up the line-up for Group D but South Africa should be the team to watch out for.

Favorite - South Africa,

The Rest of the Group: Wales, Fuji, Samoa, Namibia
