Friends off the court, rivals on the court and Australian Open is one of them that Andy Murray can get close but always comes up short, twice. Novak Djokovic has surpass the label of being favourite and only great form and play can dethrone this man for his superman abilities in 2011, 2012 awaits the new king.
Australian Open 2012
The Australian Open is one of the most challenging grand slams of all as the players tries to fight fitness already in the first month of the year. The tournament is held from the 16th of January to 29th of January in Melbourne Park. . The grand prize is set around AUD$2,300,000 for the winner of the Australian Open and crowned king of the hard courts. 2011 was the year of the Superman, Novak Djokovic and he returns to the defend his 2011 title at Melbourne Park.
The Year of Djokovic
The man to beat in 2011 was Novak Djokovic and winning three grand slams just proves to everybody that he will be returning back to Australia as favourites. Prior to 2011, the Serbian had only one grand slam to his name but just 12 months later, four and certainly hot on everybody’s lips. Just 24 years old and playing his best tennis, it will be up to his oppositions to bring their best to Down Under hard courts.
Three names will always spring into mind that can break the Djokovic reign. Only one man was successful once in 2011, Spanish Rafael Nadal managed to win the French Open but lost both the Wimbledon and US Open final. However, Nadal might not be the one that can challenge Djokovic as he is suffering from an injury that needs to be corrected, well, actually already planned after the Australian Open. Rivals Swiss star, Roger Federer, knows a thing or two of being the man to beat and winning consecutive games throughout his career. However, Federer did managed to finish 2011 with a high but it remains to see whether he can bring back the golden era that he once had on tour.
Ranked and seeded fourth, Brit Andy Murray might just be the one that can sustain the attack which everyone is waiting for. Murray started the year by winning the Brisbane International and also partnering up with former eight time grand slam champion, Ivan Lendl, as coach. Maybe this is what Murray needs, guidance and the experience from a fellow champion in order to drive him into new heights. Twice consecutive finalist in 2010 and 2011, it is time he matures and win his first grand slam.
Pretenders
Supposedly that a pretenders who came a contender then we will be speaking of are Frenchmen Jo-Wilfred Tsonga and Tomas Berdych. Both players have managed to show some potential in the past and 2012 could be a driving force. Tsonga saw good results and breaking the duck by beating both Nadal and Federer in 2011. Surprise but surely one to watch is American Mardy Fish, he has finally claim the throne over Andy Roddick. Argentinean Juan Martin Del Potro is on his way back and the Australian Open could pave way for the US Open winner to show what he’s got.
Verdict:
The Australian Open has been a bit predictable over the last two years and one thing always stays the same, Andy Murray or a Brit not able to win a Grand Slam since Fred Perry. Twice has Murray been trashed by both Federer and Djokovic, who’s next Nadal? Well, taking a long shot on this occasion, Andy Murray winning the Australian Open should give assurance over that he has Iven Lendl to seek advice to when in trouble, however Djokovic is still the man to beat.
