Sharapova & Wozniacki

World number One and World number Two, Caroline Wozniacki and Russian Maria Sharapova are going head to head in both the China Open and world rankings to see who will finish top. Both ladies are ready to give their last go before the WTA 2011 season comes to an end.

China Open 2011

The China Open will be the final Premier Event before we turn our attention to the BNP Paribas WTA Championship held in Istanbul at the end of the month. This is where the ladies who want to make the last big tournament of the season will need to win the China Open. Looking for the ranking, both Marion Bartoli and Andrea Petkovic are within the slim chances in getting there. The China Open is held from the 1st of October and final day is 9th of October in which Danish Caroline Wozniacki is to return to defend the title.

Home Advantage

With only one grand slam title to her name, Li Na is a favorite when it comes to playing on home turf and many will expect to her. But to her fan’s disappointment, there are others that are in a better position. By just looking at the top of the WTA rankings, the top two should be considered favourites for the China Open and not surprising, defending champion Caroline Wozniacki, ranked first but still without a grand slam but plenty of major titles to show for, will have another crack. Lately, ranked second, Russian Maria Sharapova has really found her stride and rediscovered her championship form. A grand slam is still on the waiting list but collecting major titles is no issues for her. Both ladies are in the latter stages of the WTA Toray Pan Pacific Open at the time this article is written with Wozniacki going out before the quarterfinals.

Contenders

Without a shadow of a doubt, Victoria Azarenka, last year’s Vera Zvonareva, Stam Stosur and Petra Kvitova are all in line to make something out in the China Open. Out of this bunch, Kvitova might be regarded as the weakest as hard courts are not her speciality but that goes with Victoria Azarnaka. So chances are that Zvonareva and Stosur will fill in the void for that.

Missing

China Open will not see the Kim Clijsters as she has ruled herself out of the rest of the season and looks to prepare for the new season with the Australian Open in mind. Others like Yanina Wickmayer, Bethanie Mattek Sans, Venus Williams and Lourdes Dominguez Lind are also out of action. Although none of them are within a chance to qualify to the BNP Paribas WTA Championship.

Prediction:

One of the last prestigious WTA tournaments in the women's season will see someone winning the $4,500,000. Past champions of Jelena Jankovic and Svetlana Kuznetsova might not have the ammunition to challenge either favourites of Sharapova or Wozniacki, but there will be some kind of effort to dethrone both ladies good form in the major titles tournament. You’ll have to take a pick of the two, as of when writing this article, after watching Sharapova winning over Julia Goerges in confidence and Wozniacki struggling to win her game with moments of lack of concentration, then Sharapova is my pick.
