Caroline Wozniacki knows how hard it is to win on tour but not in the grand slam. She didn't so well at the Rogers Cup but come Cincinnati, she will turn up, why? because it is the one before the Grand Slam. Who else will join her, Russian Maria Sharapova, two beauties.
Western & Southern Cincinnati Open 2011
Cincinnati is calling for the yet another Premier Event for the Women’s tennis in just two small weeks. The outdoor hard tennis courts are the last surface to compete on before the season ends with US Open. Many of the top Women tennis players will be heading to Cincinnati, Ohio to fight for a grand prize of $2,050,000 in this WTA Premier Event. The tournament will be held from August 15th to the 21st of August and there is no doubt that the top players will gather in full force, like the grand slam, to improve their rankings. Kim Clijsters will not return to Cincinnati in 2011 to defend her title.
The tournament has been hit with injuries and defending champion, Kim Clijsters is the one of them as she sustained an abdominal strain in last week’s Rogers Cup. The Belgium maestro drops to third in the world rankings. Agneieszka Radwanska will join Clijsters in the causalty list as she is suffering from a right should injury.
With the absence of Clijsters, the favorites to win the Cincinnati Open will have to be on Serena Williams. She managed to win the Rogers Cup just last week beating Sam Stosur in straight sets. Having said that, Serena might not want to exhaust her strengthens as the US Open is looming soon. Therefore, Victoria Azarenka could be hunger for some title as she managed to get into the semifinals in the Rogers Cup. Other favorites like Maria Sharapova will be also there and about. The Russian usually peak at the last tournament before the Grand Slam, therefore she is not to be missed off even if she made it to the fourth round.
Enough words must have been said about world number one, Caroline Wozniacki, who disappointed at the Rogers Cup after going out in the third round. She will have to regroup and gain confidence in order to get things back on form for the Grand Slam. The Cincinnati Open will also be a hunting ground for Vera Zvonareva as she also crashed out in the third round. That leaves just F. Schiavone and J. Goerges as outsiders to contempt with, but definite threat would also come from a weak favourite, Venus Williams who is on the verge of a comeback at the Cincinnati Open.
Predictions
The women’s draw is equally unpredictable in 2011 and with Clijsters out, it should get easier, not. Serena Williams is storming back to form but she is expected to rest herself well as the US Open is more important to her. Both Caroline Wozniacki and Maria Sharapova will be fancied here. The Dane has won an impressive 17 WTA tour titles and Sharapova peaks near a grand slam. Take your pick but I’m going for Caroline Wozniacki as she represents a good safe bet to reach the final.
