Two beauties gracing the clay courts of the Roland Garros are hotly tipped to get their hand on the French Open trophy, both Maria Sharapova and Caroline Wozniacki could face each other in the latter stages now that both Williams sisters are absence once again in a Grand Slam tournament.
Road to Roland Garros
When it comes to the clay courts, many will know no matter what ranking you currently are, the French Open is still up for grabs as the favorites are not usually fancied at Roland Garros. The French Open commences on the 22nd of May where the final will take place on the 4th of June. With a few absences and a few former champions to join the long list of participants, one of them will have a shot to win a grand slam. Italian Francesca Schiavone will return to Roland Garros to defend her title, she won in 2010.
The WTA ranking does speak volumes of her the women’s season has gone so far. At number 1, the Dane Caroline Wozniacki has been consistently getting herself notice and pushing her name forward as the favorite for the French Open. However, her form was excellent on hard/outdoor courts but when it came to the clay courts, she has managed to pick up only one final win and that was in Charleston. Although, in a Premier Event, Wozniacki’s best on clay was on a semifinal defeat in Madrid. Her biggest threat should come from her good friend, Victoria Azarenka, 4th in the ranking, who managed to win in Merbella. She possesses that threat that shouldn’t be underestimated. It also remains to be seen whether the Australian Open winner, Kim Clijsters has what it takes to win it. The Beligum has never won the French Open despite being twice finalist in 2001 and 2003. She returns to French Open with a 6 week break nursing multiple injuries.
Two in-form clay women players of the late should be taken noticed are world number 9, Czech Petra Kvitova and Russian Maria Sharapova. Both ladies have won the Premier Event prior to arriving to Paris with an eye on the main prize. Petra Kvitova showed her deadly forehand winners, she emerged winner over two sets in the Mutua Madrid Open over Victoria Azarenka. The young Czech joins Caroline Wozniacki as the only players in the WTA circuit to win three WTA titles so far this year. The ever so beauty of Sharapova gracing the tennis courts remains to complete the four grand slam with the French Open trophy still yet to be seen in her trophy cabinet. The Russians is showing form and the killer instinct that won the other grand slams but only managing a semifinal best at the French Open in 2007. Sharapova return to Roland Garros in good physical shape and winning the Internazionali BNL d’Italia should show her commitments to reach her first triumph in Paris.
Withdrawals
Both the Williams sisters have withdrawn from the French Open and both players are slipping down the WTA rankings. Both Klara Zakopalova and Tsvetana Pironkova will take their spot at the top of the 32. Both will be hoping to give their best shot at Roland Garros. While the Williams sister are still out, the Chinese duo Li Na and Shuai Peng will take the helm as one of the hard hitting players on the clay courts, while reigning French Open champion, Francesca Schiavone remains to prove herself.
Prediction
The defending champion, Francesca Schiavone might be just a one time wonder and that is due to her lack of consistency in her play that has lead to a disappointing display ever since she left Roland Garros last year. On the other side of the scale, Wozniacki and Azarenka have improved and winning some WTA titles have giving them confidence, but more likely Azarenka when it comes to Clay. Both players are hounded by newcomer German Julia Goerges, who is proving to be the favourite killer. Needing to choose a winner, Maria Sharapova must be fancied as an outsider, she has regain her confidence with some good footwork. If it isn’t her then all eyes will fall on Wozniacki to pick up her first Grand Slam, either way, someone will win their first French Open silverware.
