Caroline Wozniacki Caroline Wozniacki is one to beat on the WTA circuit and without the Williams sisters, other have to step up to take doen the magificant Dane. The powerhouse status could switch as we enter the clay courts and with few women who has master this surface in the past, it is always a surprising one rather than a favourite.

Mutua Madrilena Madrid Open 2011

Madrid will play host to many of the top female tennis players in the world to contest for the grand prize money of $4,500,000. The Mutua Madrilena Madrid Open returns with many former Grand Slam champions to contest each other from April 30th to 08th May at La Caja Magica. Aravane Rezai beat Venus Williams for her third and biggest Sony Ericsson WTA tour title and she will certainly return to defend her title.

Tough house

Danish Caroline Wozniacki will lead eight of the top 10 women players in the world in the Mutua Madrilena Madrid Open. She has won more titles on the tour than anyone else and certainly creating a buzz that she can win this tournament this time around rather than her finalist entry in 2009. The Dane could end up facing the Russian Dinara Safina in her section, and a potential meetings with Sam Stour, Victoria Azerenka and/or Jelena Jankovic too.

Seeded second in the tournament is Vera Zvonareva is place in the bottom half with No.3 seed Franceseca Schiavone, Li Na and also Russian Maria Sharapova. The bottom half will see much competition on the have hitting front with Sharapova leading on the looks but she has really picked things up, so it is not just a pretty face. Others joining Sharapova on the bottom half are Avan Ivanovic and Shahar Peer.

Returning

The Madrid tennis fans will be happy to see the return of one of the Williams sisters, Venus Williams will start at seeded 16 in the tournament but still remains doubtful to play. She did come out saying that she will return to the Brussels Ladies Open in May.

Back to normal after being elected number 16 on the Time Top 100 list of most influential people, Kim Clijsters returns to the clay courts after her defeat in the quarterfinals of the Miami Open. This isn’t her favorite surface but never the less she will be a threat to any ladies on the circuit.

Clay winner

Caroline Wozniacki is definitely showing maturity in her play even though it’s no pretty tennis that she is deploying. However it isn’t the way it’s done but the way of the result goes in this harsh world. She has yet to win a grand slam and with that in mind, she is favourites to win tournament that is not a grand slam at the moment. So who will give her the stern test Julia Gorges, Andrea Petkovi and Vera Zvonareva, but only the latter one can prove her worth in the Premier events.
