Time for Russians to shine and Vera Zvonareva seems to be in form at the right time as the Rogers Cup alooms. She was a finalist there last year but to go one further, she will need to overcome Serena Williams, Venus Williams, Kim Clijsters and Caroline Wozniacki.
Roger Cup Women 2011
The Rogers Cup switches it’s venue from Montreal to Toronto and the Women will start their campaign in Toronto from the 6th of August and the tournament will end on the 14th. The final will be played at the Rexall Centre at York University. The tournament will see 64 players competing for the grand prize of USD$2,050,000 million and a chance to improve their rankings. Reigning champion Danish Caroline Wozniacki will return to Canada to defend her title.
Dreaming
Many of the top female tennis players will be showing up in the next two weeks in Canada, both Premier Events and both highly profiled hard courts venues, there is a lot points at stake. The defending champion, Caroline Wozniacki, hasn’t really showed her best after Wimbledon, her last real positive result was winning the e-bosk Sony Ericcson Open in Copenhagen back in June. The Dane is still suffering from a shoulder injury but will compete in Toronto.
Seeded number 2 in Toronto is Kim Clijsters. She returns to the circuit after an ankle injury which forced her to withdraw from Wimbledon, the Rogers Cup will be her first tournament after nursing her injury.
If there was one player dreaming for more glory then Russian Vera Zvonareva could be the hot favourite to win this tournament. She was a finalist last year at Montreal and winning the Baku Cup in Azerbaijan, she is certainly in form.
Challengers
Two former world number no.1 and all grand slam champions, the Williams sister, both Serena and Venus will be enforcing their dominance in tennis in which the Canadian audience will witness. In particular, Serena Williams have returned from her injury with some great performances and winning the Bank of the West Classic at Stanford, certainly shows the intentions in the upcoming Premier Events in Canada. Wimbledon winner Petra Kvitova and finalist Maria Sharapova will also be flexing their muscles.
Wild Cards
The Canadian home crowd will be happy to see many of their female players take part in the draw when the Rogers Cup gets underway. Eugenie Bouchard (Westmount, Quebec), Stephanie Dubois (Laval, Quebec) and Aleksandra Wozniak (Blainville, Quebec) will play in Toronto. One of the highest ranked female Canadian tennis player, Rebecca Marino, will get her debut at the Rogers Cup.
Prediction
Kim Clijsters is the one to beat when it comes to hard courts and she is preparing herself for the US Open. This is also mimic by the Williams sisters as they know they will need to get a few games under their belt before they can say they have found their good form. So a bit too early for the sisters even though they are past masters here. A good bet would to be placed on Russian Vera Zvonareva, safe bet but a good one as she hasn’t been injury nor disappoint in tournaments.
Have to go for a Russian Vera Zvonareva win at the Rogers Cup, long shot, but a health one.
