Time is running for some of the ladies on the WTA tour to prove to themselves that a grand slam is not always the only glory in the tennis world. Eight of the top female tennis players will travel to Istanbul, Turkey to play the final tournament this season to see who is the best of the best in WTA.
The Lineup is set for the final showdown of the WTA Premier Event tournament of 2011. The top 8 females will contest for the grand prize of $4,900,000, largest prize money in the calendar year, held from the 25th October to the 30th October for this year’s TEB BNP Paribas WTA Championship. The eight women are ready to surface and compete one last time before they go on a break. Kim Clijsters won this tournament last year in Doha but she will not be there to defend his title in Istanbul.
WTA Championship 2011
World number One and also spending 54 weeks at the top, Caroline Wozniacki, is currently the favorites to finish off 2011 as the number one female player in the WTA ranking. She can also win this year’s final, after being a finalist last season in Doha, and enter the records once again holding off other players at the top without winning a single grand slam. Wozniacki has won 6 titles this season and losing 2, while only reaching only the semifinals in both Australian and US Open. If she wants to prove a point then beating the top 8 of the world is the only satisfaction left until next season.
World number two, Russian Maria Sharapova, is recovering immensely from her shoulder injury and with two Premier Event titles to her name, she is back. This will be her fifth appearance at the WTA Championship and winning this only once. Her late surge up the WTA ranking has shocked a few and her fitness might be a bit of a worry after pulling out with an ankle injury in Tokyo and missed China Open.
Third in the lineup is Czech Republic, Petra Kvitova, winner of Wimbledon and five other titles to her name this season. The 21 year old has had a magnificent season even if she doesn’t show up in her best in Istanbul, although this might not be her favourite surface, she will try her best.
Fourth in the rankings is Bulgarian Victoria Azarenka, who might have been as impressive like the others in the top 8 and only winning two titles this season, this is her best season. More will come from her and her fighting spirit is undoubted a fierce one, remember the words she used to describe her opponent, Maria Sharapova in Rome? Well, this will be her third appearance in the WTA championship and consistency is the key, she can get into the latter stages after the robin rounds.
Ranked fifth is Chinese LI Na who hasn’t see any medals after claiming the title of being the first Chinese women to win the French Open. Since then, not a squeak, maybe it is the off the court interests that has bothered her progress in the circuit. She claims that he outdoor or hard courts are her favourites so expect something special from her, or maybe not.
World number six, Vera Zvonareva, will be counting her fifth appearance in this prestige tournament and this season hasn’t been a great one for her. A repeat of defeat in the finals of Wimbledon and US Open, the Russian might not even have what it takes to finish off the season in a high. Time will tell, she will be joined by US Open winner, Australian Sam Stosur in the listings. She will have a better chance than Vera on the Istanbul courts. She has shone great ability in Osaka so expect a push from her. Last but not least is Polish Agnieszka Radwanska taking up the last spot of the eight qualifying place available. This will be her first appearance in the WTA Championship and winning Tokyo and Beijing, she won’t be pressure on her to make the finals. One to watch this coming championship.
Verdict:
Too many to pick from, maybe, but my money is on either Maria Sharapova or Carole Wozniacki. Both players always seem to come good when it’s not a Grand Slam and both will start from the opposite ends of the robin rounds. So highly likely only to face each other in the knockout stages but if there was an outsider to play second fiddle to both then I’ll have to point at Li Na. Haven’t heard much from her but you know she is around and if she gets her chance and feels good about herself, then there she is.
