Serena Williams is back and back with some vengence at the US Open 2011. Hurricane Irene might have swept through New York but Serena Williams looks likely to bring the thunder against her title contenders like Sharapova, Wozsniacki and Zvonareva.
US Open Grand Slam
Making the final and last Grand Slam of the year, the US Open will see the top 64 women fight it out from August 29 and the road to the final will end on the 10th of September. The last month has seen the hard courts in good use, from the Rogers Cup to Western & Southern Cincinnati Premier Event, many of the top ranked females are ready to get a hold of the last big trophy of the season. Defending champion Kim Clijsters will not be in Flushing Meadows to compete with the rest.
Seeded
Somehow the seeding for the women rankings does not make much difference in finding the favourites for the US open. So for the world No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark being seeded first for the US Open, she will be under pressured once again to deliver. She managed back in 2009 as a finalist but ever since then, she is unable to come near to that result she once managed. Above all, her latest two disappointing early exits from both Rogers Cup and Western & Southern, has made one big U-turn to sack his dad as a coach. Wozniacki will have to find more fight in her if she wants to get far in a grand slam tournament.
After Wozniacki, comes two Russians, Vera Zvonareva and Maria Sharapova are ranked respective 2nd and 3rd. Zvonareva has been consistently being able to compete into the latter stages while Sharapova won the Cincinnati Premier Event by beating Serbian Jelena Jankovic in a grueling three set match. Sharapova always do well before the grand slam and as a former 2006 US Open winner, she’s in a very good form.
The rest of the pack has Wimbledon champion, Petra Kvitova seeded fifth and French Open champion, Li Na, seeded sixth are amongst the mix. Both players are not expertise in the hard courts but their chances are as good as anyone.
Of all the contestants, three times US Open champions, seeded no. 28, Serena Williams looks very hungry to get back on track for her fourth US grand slam title after coming back from a foot injury. She managed to win back to back tournaments starting with the Bank of West Classic and the Rogers Cup. This will silence many of the critics out there and no doubt, playing into many bookies hang as a favorite. Her sister, Venus, might be ill prepared as she withdrew from both Rogers Cup and Cincinnati due to viral illness. Venus might not be up to the task this time around.
Prediction:
With the prize money of USD$8 million dollars for the winner to collect, it’s something that all the ladies are looking to get a hold of besides the trophy. The seeded players are just to give some placement for the players to see how their route would be to the final, but to pin point the ones that can win it then there are only a few. For the hunger and determination then Maria Sharapova is a good bet to place on, each way would not be a bad thing. Since Kim Clijsters has withdrawn for the tournament, it really leaves Serena Williams as a great favorite to the throne despite her ranking of 28 in the draw.
