Li Na

The First Asian Lady to win a Grand Slam and with the good form, Li Na, will be hunting her second Grand Slam title in a space of a month. Wimbledon will be a good hunting ground but she might have to face either of the Williams sisters have return to the big stage.

Wimbledon 2011

The climax of the green season begins here and ends all in the two week period to find a champion for the third grand slam on offer in the tennis calendar year. The women’s Wimbledon tournament will be held from the 20th June to the 2nd of July. There will be certain surprises along the way to the final but in the last few years, one family has dominated this prestigious tournament, will this year be a start of a new era? Serena Williams will return to the grass courts of Wimbledon to defend her title.

Return of the Queen

The last 11 years have seen one family name dominating Wimbledon nine times as a winner on the final day of the women tennis. Both Venus and Serena share amongst the nine trophy while two outsider, Amelie Mauresmo and Russian Maria Sharapova lifted the trophy too. Venus has taken this tournament five time, the last one being in 2008 while 2009 saw her as the defeated finalist, her sister Serena Williams won this tournament four times and is the defending champion in search for her third consecutive Wimbledon champion. However, both Queens of Wimbledon is set to return to full time tennis after a serious of injury. Both Venus and Serena returned to the tennis scene  last Tuesday at Eastbourne, bit unusal for the sisters to play pre-tournament before Wimbledon, but in this occasion, they both need the practice after a lengthy layoff.

Grand Slam Virgin

Both Russian Vera Zvonareva and Danish Caroline Wozniacki are always front runners when it comes to these tournaments but whether they win a grand slam remains a question mark. Zvonareva is an inch close than Wozniacki as the Russian managed to get in the WImbledon final in 2010 but was soundly beaten by Serena Williams. She will want another run and she might fancy Serena on the other side of the net. It doesn’t matter who Wozniacki will meet, it is herself she needs to conquer in order to win her first grand slam. She does well in tournament but the major wins is the Achilles heel, her father is not tipping her to shine in this year’s Wimbledon.

Who else?

There are others in line to take good care of the throne, another Russian getting closer to top form is Maria Sharapova. She got knocked out of the French Open in the quarterfinals and definitely showing some promise, the grass is her specialty. French Open winner Chinese Li Na will be throwing her name in the mix but her play might suit this surface as she likes the tennis ball to flow slower. Without a doubt, Victoria Azarenka cannot be omitted in this line up. She is starting to get her fortunes to shine but maybe a latter stage performance is consider good.

Wild-Out

A few players in the circuit will have happy to know that Kim Clijsters will not be on the other side of the net, sad for the fans but even more disappointing for the Kim as she will have to nurse her damaged foot. British number two Heather Watson is one of the 8 British players that has got the wildcard for Wimbledon. Naomi Broady, Katie O'Brien and Emily Webley-Smith were also given the wildcards.

Prediction

If the French Open surprised you then you have another whole lot of players to choose from. It was someone new that took the French Open while a former finalist saw her dream dashed. For Wimbledon, you have the Williams sister just returning to the tennis scene, their experience will take them for but the angle we are looking is whether they can weather the physical toughness of what it requires to win the Wimbledon. This leaves a chance for ones who are likely to be in form, both Wozniacki and Zvonareva are not up to the task but Sharapova is on the brink to get her confidence. Going against all odds someone like Julia Goerges could be an outsider while playing it safe, Li Na might just have the edge when it comes to grinding her way into the final once again.

Li Na to reach the Wimbledon Final but for her to win will get you odds 8.00 at Ladbrokes.
