Bari

The quick ones

The symbol of the club is a cock and never in their history has this been as appropriate as it is at the moment. They are quick to wake up on the pitch and their fast counter attacks have proven deadly for many teams last year, boasting the feat of being only one of three clubs not to have allowed Inter a victory throughout the 2009/10 Serie A campaign.
Coach: Ventura

Coach Ventura, the mind behind Bari’s lethal tactics, is
still in his place steering the Bari ship towards ambitious targets. The fans
had in the past been used to more recognition for their beloved Bari but had
abandoned the big dreams along the way as their club crumbled under financial
pressure. Today it seems very possible that the team can go back to having some
higher ambitions. More than mere staying up
in Serie A after the 38 games are
over in May. Europe may be just around the corner.
Bari’s revolution has not been ignited by some hefty investments on the market. Acquisitions were of good quality but never stellar. They were of excellent quality for Serie B and that is why they passed that test with flying colours a little more than a year ago. Since then the manager that had lead the team, Antonio Conte, resigned and in his stead the experienced Ventura was handed over a squad that needed to adapt quickly to life in the top flight. Ventura’s ability to work with the youngsters and his previous experiences in Serie A with other clubs proved a winning combination as he crafted a style of play that adapted perfectly to the men he had at his disposal.
The lack of fear in Bari’s approach is the key to their winning mentality. That and the speed which they have from their midfield upwards makes them very similar to Barcelona in the style adopted. Both the strikers, Kutuzov and Barreto, are the fast type of striker. They have technique but are not the kind of strikers that will be bringing down the ball down with their imposing physique amidst opponents trying to climb over their backs, or a Vieri-style striker that will be lifting himself above the defenders into the box to head the ball home. On the contrary, they are less prone to the physical kind of football and more similar to the team wingers Alvarez and Ghezzal, with whom they are asked to exchange passes and cover for often as the latter open wide to find the spaces where full-backs often forget to mind.
On the counter attack it is impressive to note how often the Bari offenders find themselves in bigger numbers than their opponents. Both their strikers and their wingers, together with one or both of their central midfielders strike rapidly and hit the opposing team hard. This has proven a special weapon for them and although they are better able to perform when in front of their fans’ loud cheers they should be able to strike jackpot again with their trademark football this season as well, perhaps even improving on last season’s 10th place.
The addition of Algerian striker Ghezzal will prove
fabulous. He is very technical and rapid and therefore fits in well in
Ventura’s 4-4-2. Central midfielders Almiron and Donati are very valuable for
recovering the ball and setting the fast four men running with their precise
passing.
The problem, when compared to last year, should concern the defensive line-up. The young duo Ranocchia – Bonucci, who so ably guarded the Bari goal last year have gone back to their respective clubs. Bonucci, given his displays, has also earned himself a transfer to Juventus and a call-up to Prandelli’s national team as one of the starters. Ranocchia has been given a prominent role at Genoa and is now half owned by Inter as well. Marco Rossi and Raggi have been brought in to make up for that and one of the Masiello brothers, Andrea, has been moved to the centre of defence as well. Two of these three will be in charge of replicating what Bonucci and Ranocchia had managed to create last season but it will of course be hard to get that project running from the outset. Luckily, the reliable Gillet is still keeping a watchful eye in between Bari’s posts.
Predicted finishing position: 10th
There have been some massive changes for Bari’s backline but Ventura’s plans will hardly be dented if he manages to keep a hold on the unit and impose his winning tactics. All the forward players fit Bari’s counter-attacking style perfectly and should the mechanisms be oiled for those prohibitive games on the road as well then the fans may be in for a very good finishing position.
