Brescia

A formula B experiment

Brescia needed to go through the playoffs at the end of the last season in order to gain promotion to Serie A and they may be playing with fire when 2010/11 draws to an end. Some final minute signings do look promising though and their enhanced fire power may make it easier for them to make the 38-40 point mark sooner rather than later.

Coach: Iachini

Tactics: 4-3-1-2

Players In: Diamanti, Sereni, Kone, Eder, Juan Antonio, Daprela, Zebina, Zoboli, Feczesin

Players Out: Rispoli, Paghera, Viotti

Current Probable Formation: Sereni, Zebina, Zoboli, Martinez, Dallamano, Kone, Budel, Vass, Diamanti, Eder, Caracciolo

Last year’s main offensive pathway always involved the tall striker Caracciolo. He was always signaled out as belonging to a higher category like the Serie A or a top league in Europe. His first steps in the Italian top flight with Palermo had been very promising but the usual mistakes attributable to the recklessness of youth lead him to a premature divorce from the Sicilian club. He found new life at Brescia and now that he has managed to regain the possibility of showing off his talent he is intent on not letting go and focus on his job.

Aiding Caracciolo’s attempts will this year be Diamanti, who himself encountered problems when coming to climb those final steps after a brief period of stardom, and Eder. The latter has topped the scorers list for Serie B last season and will be playing alongside Caracciolo in attack. Diamanti, who is more of a playmaker, will be playing in behind the two. After a number of excellent performances with Livorno Diamanti had been snapped up by Zola, who at the time was manager at West Ham. In London the Italian forward soon took charge of the team and showed great sense of adaptability. However, the turmoil at the London club which is still ongoing, prevented him from succeeding and proving his worth. This will be the season in which he targets a renaissance and his hard-headedness and magical left foot should help him realize his ambitions quite quickly.

The classic trident which Brescia sought to create should guarantee success on the attacking front. All three players possess the right qualities for the three-man offensive line-up to work perfectly. Caracciolo has the strength and can command respect in the air. Eder is the rapid kind of striker who is ideal to run into the empty spaces. His technique allows for rapid one-two passing and his goal instinct is undeniable. Diamanti may be still a rough diamond but he has great talent and determination and will be inspiring creativity in this side. The problem in attack for Brescia is that the absence of any of these three cannot be patched up for easily.

The rest of the team is composed of average players for this category. Last season they may have enjoyed the fear factor and much possession throughout the 90 minutes but the Serie A will be a different reality for them. Experienced midfielder Baiocco, who wore the Juventus jersey for a while as well, was supposed to leave the club for Crystal Palace but the move fell through as he opted to stay in Italy after a brief trial period. This may have been positive news for the fans although it is yet unclear whether he will be performing well enough to prevent newcomer Kone or Budel from taking away his place.

The backline has suffered some injury setbacks which will make it thus that Brescia start with a handicap in their first few games. Even ex-Juventus right-back Zebina, who signed on very recently, will be unavailable for the first weeks. Once he is in shape he should be back at running on a Serie A pitch after having been snubbed for a long time during his last seasons at the Bianconeri.

Predicted finishing position: 13th

The strongest department in this Brescia side is undoubtedly their attack. They have got the bite but the rest is quite disappointing in terms of talent. However, there may be enough heart for this team to stay up and achieve more. It will be a tough struggle but with Diamanti leading the team and Eder and Caracciolo finding the net with some consistency they will be able to surprise many unprepared sides.
