Cagliari

More of the same

Club president Cellino has sought to rebuild a new future for the squad, or perhaps it would be better to say that he is meaning to dismantle the club. But before doing that he has to polish his stars well so that he may be able to get the best possible return on his investment. He will be expecting the team to perform and with many of last season’s protagonists still part of the team Cagliari should be no walkovers this year either.

With Allegri’s quality management last year Cagliari had been one of the most impressive teams in Serie A. They ultimately finished in the 16th position but they will not be judged for that by anyone who followed their journey last season. In fact, once they had managed to reach the 38-point target before even February was over they relaxed and “helped” other clubs with their own agendas. Since having managed those 38-points they drew six and lost eight of their remaining 14 games.

A whole summer later Cagliari find themselves with a new coach in charge, Bisoli, who despite the relative experience is not comparable to Allegri. The latter has in fact secured for himself a move to Milan and will this season be contemplating on how and whether to field Ronaldinho, Ibrahimovic, Pato and Robinho at the same time. The tide has changed for the Sardegna club and the transfer market dealings consolidate this perspective. It is true that most of the starting eleven from last season are still there. The most important five elements from the midfield upwards – Cossu, Matri, Conti, Lazzari and Biondini – have not moved away from the club. The offers, however, were not abundant otherwise Cellino would have given in. This leaves Cagliari with a strong backbone but still to deal with the statement that Cellino is making in not seeking to strengthen the club for the future.

The key exits were those of Dessena, Larrivey, Parola, Jeda and Lopez. The latter has retired and is on his way to getting the license to be able to coach. He will be missed at the back despite the decent line-up Bisoli will be able to count on. Apart from Lopez the defensive line is still relatively unchanged as well.

The goalkeeper, Marchetti, is perhaps the most promising player at Cagliari along with Matri. Arsenal were rumoured to be after him, just like some other important clubs in Italy. However, Cellino intends to wait on getting a higher price for the man who replaced the injured Buffon at the World Cup. This policy has angered Marchetti, who had demanded the transfer during summer and the end result is now that Cellino has ordered the player out of the squad until he deems it fit. Cellino’s hard-headedness is well known so unless the goalkeeper apologizes he may never be seen playing for Cagliari again until his contract runs out. The president will be standing his ground especially since he can count on the services of solid goalkeepers like Agazzi and the newcomer Pelizzoli, who was once a promising keeper in his early days at Roma.

The highlight acquisition for the club has been striker Acquafresca, who had made his debut in Serie A with Cagliari before earning a transfer to Atalanta, and later Genoa throughout that same season, after an exceptional 2008/09 campaign in which he scored 14 goals for Cagliari. He is back home now and ready to partner another affirmed Cagliari striker, Matri. With Nene providing very decent cover up in attack for the two the striking force of Cagliari should not present problems as they go.

Predicted finishing position: 17th

There have been few personnel changes and after last season’s display this may be a positive thing for Cagliari. The loss of Allegri as coach and president Cellino’s eagerness to sell his priced assets, however, will distort club targets. For the time being it will be the same old Cagliari – efficient at home and more than capable of securing themselves permanence in Serie A, although there may still be room for a late scare for the fans.
