Chievo

Shopping in France

Chievo has been a fairy tale a few seasons ago, climbing to the heights of Serie A and going close to a first ever participation in the illustrious Champions League. That was a dream which they lived when under Del Neri but things have changed since then. Today’s transfer campaign has been done in France mostly. Will the experiment work out well for them?

Coach: Pioli

Tactics: 4-3-1-2

Players In: Fernandes, Bogliacino, Guana, Constant, Cesar, Rincon, Jefferson

Players Out: Yepes, Bogdani, Iori

Current Probable Formation: Sorrentino, Sardo, Andreolli, Cesar, Mantovani, Luciano, Rigoni, Marcolini, Bentivoglio, Fernandes, Pellisier

Cesar was bought from Grenoble and Constant from Chateauroux. The highlight buy of the summer for the small club from Verona has been Fernandes, who made the headlines back in June for having inflicted the only defeat to the Spanish national team in South Africa on their way to the title. He is a Swiss attacking midfielder but, as for the other players that joined from France, it is yet debatable on how he can fit into this team.

Chievo is mostly composed of Italian players who have now got used to their style of play. Few were in fact the departures, although quite high profile such as that of Yepes, whose old age proved an irresistible allure to Milan. Bogdani was not very involved with the first team so he will not be as missed.

Neither of the new faces can realistically be considered first team players, apart from Cesar perhaps, whom Pioli may see as the ideal replacement for the departed Yepes as a central defender. Fernandes, despite the international profile, may find it hard to break into the team that takes to the field every weekend. The talent is there though, just like in the case of Constant. Yet the important factor will be their level of adaptability to this side and the commitment they show in training.

When all is said and done the arrivals have been too many and all possible causes of dugout trouble and tactical headaches for Pioli. The manager, however, knows that survival will depend a lot – too much actually – on the precious goals that will come from the team top scorer Pellisier. The striker has been doing extremely well for Chievo in the past years, hovering around the 10-goal mark since the 2005/06 season. He is a true lifeline for the team and their main hope for survival.

Predicted finishing position: 14th

The squad has a serious quality deficit and the anonymity and actual value of the new arrivals does not help to salvage Chievo’s dubious summer transfer campaign. There is great dependence on Pellisier so if he was to let the team down the ship would be sinking straight into the Serie B abyss. Otherwise it is up to the new arrivals to help keep the ship afloat.
