Palermo

Young starlets and impatient owners

President Zamparini kept faith to his policy of pricing his assets and then giving them away at the right price, only for new blood with a promising future ahead to come replace them. Known for his short temper, however, will he prove patient enough to wait for the newcomers as they find their feet in a difficult league as the Serie A?
Coach: Rossi
Tactics: 4-3-1-2
Players In: Maccarone, Munoz, Bacinovic, Ilicic, Pinilla, Glik, Joao Pedro, Santiago Garcia, Jara, Rigoni, Maniero, Kasami, Darmian
Players Out: Cavani, Kjaer, Simplicio, Bresciano, Dellafiore, Succi, Rubinho, Budan, Bertolo
Current Probable Formation: Sirigu, Cassani, Munoz, Bovo, Balzaretti, Migliaccio, Liverani, Nocerino, Pastore, Hernandez, Miccoli
Zamparini may well swear that he will give his players and manager a chance but when all is said and done he ultimately comes down hard on failures, even if the trend is only for a short stretch. He has sacked some 28 managers throughout his stay in football in between the presidency of Venezia and that of Palermo. This characteristic of his may be the main obstacle for this young and talented side to collect any fruit this season.
And it is a pity given the great scouting job the club has
been making. The number of talented youngsters which have been coming and going
at the club in the past season has been impressive. Cavani and Kjaer were the
latest names to have been sold after surprising big clubs on the lookout for
talent. At Palermo they affirmed themselves just as are expected to do
youngster Pastore, Hernandez, Munoz, Bacinovic and Ilicic.
The first name on
the list is a player who, along with Hernandez, has not joined the side this
season and for this reason as well he is the one around which there is much
expectation growing. Dubbed the new Kaka by some and the new Zidane by others
he has shown incredible promise. A tall guy like him would have been thought of
as clumsy with the ball but he is far from that. He has class, technique and
vision. It will not come as a surprise if he is next summer’s most expensive
transfer. However, he must first reach new heights with Palermo. Does he have
the right men surrounding him at Palermo though?
Despite the relatively young average age of the team he actually does have a good squad built around him. Ex-Boca Juniors defender Munoz, who joined this year, will go straight into the first team to form what is supposed to be a reliable duo with Bovo. He came to Palermo amidst great enthusiasm from president Zamparini, claiming he had found a new starlet. We will need to wait and see about that. Italy is not exactly the right league in which young defenders can have it easy from the start. He will definitely need time to adapt and this will mean that Palermo will be conceding goals too.
The full-backs are no veterans but they have extensive experience, including a number of presences with the Italian national team. They are very useful for the team where build up of play is concerned but less satisfying on the defensive front. Therefore, two more reasons why you should not get any defenders from Palermo for your Serie A fantasy football side this season. In goal there is young Sirigu who also made it to the national team lately despite some lapses of concentration throughout the season.
In midfield the brains are those of veteran Liverani. Having himself worn the blue jersey of the Azzurri he has a lot of responsibility concerning the flow of the game. Young Bacinovic, who joined from Maribor along with compatriot Ilicic this summer, is the main alternative for Liverani and is expected to feature often given the frequent injuries the Italian usually stumbles upon throughout the season. Migliaccio and Nocerino, one entering his fourth and the other his third season at Palermo respectively, are the preferred choices for flanking the central mastermind in midfield.
The attack will be manned by three man, two of whom are bound to be young sensation Pastore and the short yet magical Miccoli, who is going into his fourth season at the Rosanero and chasing the 20-goal mark after having progressively improved on his tally every season until he reached 19 last year. He may have turned 31 this summer but he is expected to keep giving an important contribution to the team as captain of this relatively young side.
Last season’s top scorer at relegated Siena, Maccarone, is a reliable alternative for filling up for that third space in attack. He is a front man just like young Hernandez and both will be very effective in that role. Ilicic and Pinilla are excellent substitutes as well making abundance a problem in that department for Delio Rossi.
Predicted finishing position: 7th
Talent is plentiful, especially in attack. Delio Rossi is a very good manager and will surely help this team progress towards new and ambitious targets if given time. The problem, apart from a suspicious defence which should take its time to solidify to decent levels, will primarily be president Zamparini’s impatience. Should he refuse to give the team time to mature there may be serious internal problems that will hamper Palermo’s potential and what they can actually achieve this season.
