Young and ambitious

It will not be easy to repeat last season’s eighth position in the table especially with the choice of Marino as coach and the many new faces included in this year’s team. Some, like Giovinco, Candreva and Marques, should have an immediate impact on the team however. The risk is perhaps of running too fast for this still young and growing side.
Coach: Marino
Tactics: 4-3-3
Players In: Giovinco, Crespo, Candreva, Marques, Dellafiore, Gobbi, Pisano, Paletta, Jadid, Pereira, Paonessa, Diniz
Players Out: C. Lucarelli, Lanzafame, Biabiany, Mariga, Castellini, D. Zenoni, M. Rossi, Coppola
Current Probable Formation: Mirante, Zaccardo, Paci, A. Lucarelli, Antonelli, Valiani, Morrone, Dzemaili, Giovinco, Bojinov, Marques
Last season they were labeled the big surprise of Serie A along with Bari after the first round of games were through. When May came around though, Bari had managed to muscle off the Gialloblu for that title and not only because of Bari’s consistency but also due to Parma’s sudden deflation. Guidolin proved once again inconsistent and although the eighth place was a very positive placing for them the directors had expected something more after the exceptional start. It comes as no surprise that Guidolin was replaced by Marino, who last season was in charge of Udinese.
Marino’s track record and his troubles at Udinese, however, shed doubts on the sanity of this decision by president Ghirardi. The choice of players has been more approving and their policy of not wanting to get a bunch of players on loan only to lose them back to their original teams the following season is a sign of stability and continuity which the club is after. The projects are ambitious at Parma and although they will be declaring that their aim is to stay in Serie A last season’s eighth place still burns. Having been so close to Europe they would like to make that final step into the Europa League. The competition for places is tough however.
Let’s have a look at the players. There have been many new
faces who are expected to boss themselves right into the first team, starting
from ex-Juventus starlet Giovinco whose thin frame and short stature have
prevented him from making his mark with the previous coaches at the Bianconeri.
With Del Neri having taken charge and his predilection for strength in the team
the youngster could only choose to move away on
a permanent transfer if he was
to ever become someone in football. He may transpire very little conviction and
determination but he is excellent with the ball. Marino’s tactics will have to
revolve around the playmaker if he wants to get the most out of the lad and
boost Parma’s chances.
The problem here is that he is irreplaceable judging by what the manager has at his disposal. Perhaps Galloppa could be advanced into that position in behind the strikers when Giovinco is injured – and it will happen given his high predisposition to injury. However, ex-Siena midfielder Galloppa will only be back from a long term injury at the start of 2011. He will already be missed in midfield where creativity is lacking let alone if Giovinco gets injured and no other player can help fill in the vacuum. Another new face, Candreva, could be the answer just like Marques who came on from Espanyol and should be a starter given his ability to play wide in attack. The Spanish forward is the only player who can actually fill up that important role in Marino’s 4-3-3.
Luckily, striker Bojinov can be tried in that wide position
and he should not embarrass himself there either. He is of course better in a
central role but with ‘the young Inzaghi’, alias Paloschi, and Crespo in the
team it is them who should get the preference for the most advanced attacking
role. After trying his hand at four other Italian clubs and Chelsea, Crespo
finally returned back to the team that had originally brought him
to Europe
from River Plate back in the distant 1996. The goal scoring instinct in players
like the Argentine never dies so he will definitely come in handy throughout
the season. Paloschi is a valid jolly who should be given his chance as well.
As already mentioned, the middle of the park lacks in creativity but the quality is still there with the likes of Dzemaili, Morrone, Gobbi and Valiani expected to feature frequently for the Gialloblu. The defence is a reliable unit as well ranging from the experience of ex-Italy international Zaccardo to new left-back sensation Antonelli who was close to signing for Inter this summer. Paci and Alessandro Lucarelli should have the edge over Dellafiore and Pisano in central defence whilst Mirante will of course keep hold of goalkeeping duties.
Predicted finishing position: 12th
There are good plans for this Parma and the club’s moves towards an exciting future have been praiseworthy. However, fans should understand that there is need for time to build something important despite the good signings. Giovinco is the best acquisition but the Gialloblu should be wary of not relying too much on a player who injures himself with too high a frequency. The recovery of Galloppa will help restore creativity to the midfield so Parma should this season grow as they go along.
