Pozzo’s sale plans

Club president Pozzo had been rumoured to have moved to acquire Espanyol last season, leaving Udinese in the hands of a new owner in the process. Some team stars have been sold over the summer and other offers tabled for the likes of Di Natale were not turned down until other obstacles had the deals fall through. Within such a context it will be difficult for fans to hope for anything other than a close call, perhaps even closer than last season’s.

Coach: Guidolin

Tactics: 3-4-3

Players In: Denis, Karagounis, Abdi, Angella, Vydra, Monzon, Muriel, Fabbrini

Players Out: D’Agostino, Pepe, Lodi, Candreva, Obodo, Lukovic, Alemao, Romero

Current Probable Formation: Handanovic, Zapata, Coda, Domizzi, Cuadrado, Asamoah, Pinzi, Pasquale, Sanchez, Di Natale, Floro Flores

A look at Udinese’s transfer dealings prove Pozzo’s intentions of not seeking to return the club to the heights it once enjoyed in the Serie A standings. New manager Guidolin will not have been given any other target beyond keeping the team in the top Italian division. Having had star players Pepe and D’Agostino removed from his plans and not replaced with anyone else Guidolin must have been in agreement with club policy before signing on given he that he has kept quite over such transfers. In addition, valuable players like Candreva, Obodo and Lukovic have also been transferred to more ambitious clubs. This leaves Guidolin very short on alternatives, especially from the midfield upwards.

At the back there seems to be abundance of defenders given Guidolin’s predilection for the three-man defence. Zapata – Coda – Domizzi should be the first team backline with Ferronetti and Basta good replacements. The latter can also be used as a midfield winger given Guidolin’s preference for having cover-up on the midfield lines in order to help the defensive line. Those currently expected to start on the flanks are Pinzi and Pasquale. Both are reliable choices although Pinzi is more prone to getting caught cold since he is more adapted to playing as a pure midfielder rather than as almost a full-back.

Inler and Asamoah are two excellent central midfield choices. They have both the abilities to snatch back the ball from the opponents’ possession and the technique to produce some effective ball distribution. They are perhaps the most important elements in Guidolin’s tactics due to their ability to give so much to the team. With the international experience they bring to the squad both the Swiss and the Ghanaian are hard to replace.

The leader of the team is still Di Natale. A quite man who likes to speak for himself on the pitch with his goals, he last year had enough to his name to be able to command the top scorers list. He was just one goal shy of the 30-goal mark but knows that it will be harder than last year to get even close to the 20-goal mark this time round. The team has been weakened and had it not been for disagreements between Udinese and Juventus on the eleventh hour he would be wearing a different kind of black and white shirt at the moment and worrying less about the Serie B this season.

Di Natale has a lot of responsibility to shoulder this season. It will be his goals that will guarantee that the team stays up. However, as he has shown throughout the unfortunate campaign in South Africa for Italy, he is not one to stand up straight when the pressure heaps on. Perhaps he may be given a helping hand by young Chilean forward Alexis Sanchez who definitely proved himself an exceptionally talented player throughout the 2010 World Cup. Last season he only scored five goals and produced just three assists. He will need to step up his game if Udinese are to survive. The other two main strikers for the club are Floro Flores and Corradi. The former should be a starter since he can flank Di Natale just like Sanchez does on the right hand side. Corradi is more of a true striker who would go to replace Di Natale in attack. As such Corradi should be seeing more of the bench than the other three attackers.

Predicted finishing position: 15th

The team has not been strengthened. On the contrary it has been stripped off of valid men. Both Inler and Asamoah are key men for Guidolin. The goals which Di Natale and Sanchez will be able to guarantee will also prove important for Udinese’s future. It will be a long and perilous journey for the Friulani and if their best players underperform they will be risking relegation.
