Bernard Tomic faces hard-hitting Denis Istomin from Uzbekistan in the first round of the Monaco Masters ATP event.

Tomic is the youngest player in the draw but will start favourite in this game. There's not much between the two players in either offical world rankings or recent form. Neither player has a great record on clay but I fancy Tomic may adjust better of the two.

There has only been one previous meeting between the two, in the Brisbane Open earlier this year which Tomic won 6-3 7-6(4).

Istomin is a solid player but has a poor record on clay. Statistically speaking, Tomic's clay record is inferior to Istomin but Tomic's style of play suggests he can progress more on the surface. Much of Istomin's clay record is based on his challenger tour matches - he was hugely successful on that tour last year.
