JAYAWARDENE TOP DELHI DAREDEVILS BATSMAN @ 4/1
Final result: 0 - 1Profit: 0.00 - 3 = -3
Things are spicing up nicely in the IPL with the top of the table looking more congested than Picadilly Circus at 5pm on a bank holiday Friday.
The Delhi Daredevils currently occupy top spot after a terrific sequence of results, sometimes swatting their opponents aside whilst riding their luck at other times. But that's the nature of the IPL - it doesn't need much to go awry before an upset occurs.
On Monday, by IPL betting standards, a win for the Kolkata Knight Riders would be such an upset. And yet, KKR are just one point behind the Daredevils and have won their last five. At around 11/8 - 6/4, that represents decent value. That value looks even better when you consider one of Delhi's key match winners - our very own KP - is on the plane home to fulfil his test duties for England. On the grounds of price and the loss of Kevin Pietersen, I recommend a small stakes bet on the Knight Riders to win a closely fought battle.
Despite having my pockets fleeced in recent results on Top Batsman, I'm going in again here - in part because there's no KP and the path to a successful pick in both sides looks a little clearer.
For Delhi, there's two obvious choices: Sehwag and Jayawardene. Now if my recent record is anything to go by, whichever one I put up - the other will pip him to the honour. The sensible way to go is to back both...but of course accepting half the ROI is not how I swing so I'm going to plump for Jayawardene. I accept this is a brave stance as Sehwag has just beaten the record for consecutive 50s in the IPL not once but twice. However, he let me down last time and I'm still sulking so Mahela will do for me this time. He's slipped down the order a place or two and if Sehwag can put a decent score on the board, Jayawardene will come to the crease swinging the willow and can rack up a big score building on the opening platform. That's the theory at least.
For Kolkata, the choice is easier. Opener Gambhir is the key to his side's success so far and regularly scores over 40 which is the minimum needed to win Top Batsman. He's a Delhi home boy so will want to show the Daredevils how to warm up the local crowd. Happy to take a shortish price for this magician.
