It will be the 4th game between they both. The record till now is 2-1 Melzer. Melzer won both games they played at clay but the last one was 5 years ago, so it doesn't matter anyway. The last game was at Indian Wells, 2011, and Gasquet made it 6-1 6-3.

Gasquet doesn't have that problem about switching surfaces. He is talented enough to play at all courts types. He made a decent campaing at Estoril and Madrid. Losing to Del Potro and Federer.

Melzer is just having a terrible year. He is holding a 2-4 record at clay, losing to Almagro, Ferrer, Benneteau and Wawrinka. He just won Lopez and Kubot. The game against Lopez was at Madrid, and strange things happened at Madrid, that's why I won't trust that much at this result.

Rome is a real clay court and Gasquet is much more skilled and has a lot of variety to show us here. I don't believe he will be in trouble against Melzer.
